Rare Pokemon That Can Be Found In Greenwich Village

If your Pokémon hunting has you wandering near Washington Square Park in the near future, don’t forget to stop by Freud on La Guardia Place. This beautifully decorated bistro in Greenwich Village is putting a new spin on Austrian food, and has a fantastic cocktail and wine menu to quench your thirst after hours of Mewtwo meandering. They offer a concise menu of small and shared plates before moving on to the entrees, but a great cocktail and some interesting bites to share is the way to go at this spot.

We’ve had a lot of interesting, even educational meals here at Food N’ Fest, but we just found something new that really blew us away. If you are Austrian, this may be a staple, but forgive me as we explain the beauty that is Liptauer. Pronounced Lip-tower, this spreadable mix is traditionally a fresh farmer cheese spread with paprika that is spread onto some great crusty bread. At Freud, they have the homemade crusty bread on lock, but they’ve whipped the Liptauer with golden beets making for an eye-opening shared plate.

If it’s meat your after, start with the house charcuterie with whole grain mustard, onion jam and pickles. They also have a great flatbread with eggplant, sunchokes and homemade ricotta buried under an arugula salad. If you happen to make it through this selection, and need more poke-fuel, there is a cheesy sourdough spatzle with broccoli rabe and basil that will ease your mac n’ cheese withdrawals (for now anyway). Finally, the Freud burger has received a lot of acclaim, and will definitely hit the spot if you aren’t embracing your inner Austrian.

Freud offers an almost exclusively Austrian selection of beer and wine, and even have their own label of white wine. But at a spot like this, you definitely have to kick back with a well made cocktail and enjoy the beautiful location.  Check out “The Slip” with bison grass vodka (we had to Google Bison Grass) and Kaffir lime leaf. It’s an old-school crafted cocktail that’s everything you need on a hot summer day. If you’re still thirsty, or aren’t feeling the Bison Grass (definitely worth checking out), you should take a crack at the refreshing “Bernays” with gin, muddled mint, cucumber and lime.
