Octopus So Tender, You’ll Be Begging For More

Hospitality and genuinely good service can go a long way. It could be the difference-maker in whether or not you decide to give a restaurant with mediocre food a second chance or it could be the deciding factor in what has you describe a restaurant as “great” versus “just okay”. Taverna 38, a quaint neighborhood restaurant in Williston Park, is not only serving up delicious authentic Greek fare, but also providing remarkable service that will have you telling all your friends about this spot.

The location doesn’t offer up much parking, but there is valet service to ease the pain of looking for a spot. Once you’re inside, welcoming faces and an accommodating staff will be there to serve your every need. The restaurant has a charming authentic Greek feel to it, with white and blue curtains separating the bar and seating area. If you’re simply looking to grab a cocktail, you can pop a squat at the bar, or if you’re looking for a sit-down meal that will leave you feeling like you just visited an eatery in Mykonos, then be sure to make a reservation ahead of time to beat the rush of a busy dinner crowd.

Greek classics like Tzatziki, Hummus, Marinated Olives, Dolmades (stuffed grape leaves), and Halloumi make up a few of the choices for appetizers. Our recommendation is to mix it up with some of the hot and cold appetizers. The Melitzanosalata is a spread made up of roasted eggplant, feta, and garlic. Perfect for dipping some deliciously warm pita bread in! The Oxtapodi is also a must-order. This dish is made up of grilled octopus, capers, red onions, and a red wine vinaigrette. By far, one of the most tender pieces of octopus we’ve ever tried.

Entrees are something worth raving about as well. You can order off of “Yia Yia’s Kitchen” menu if you’re looking for Greek comfort food like Mousaka or Pastitsio, but if you’re looking for fresh fish or lamb chops, be sure to hear the specials or peruse the “From the Land” menu. The Paidakia consists of 4 baby lamb chops, classically marinated with rosemary, thyme, and oregano. The specials will offer several variants of fish, all of which will be better than the next.
