Over-sized Cheese Sticks, Flaming Drinks, and a Lot of Dancing
Very few places offer up the trifecta – this is how we at Food ‘n’ Festivities categorize the spots we visit – whether it’s a good place for food, drinks, or late night shenanigans. The Late Late Bar & Spirit Grocer on Manhattan’s Lower East Side manages to check all the boxes, offering up a menu of diverse food and drinks, as well as a pretty bad ass late night gathering if you’re trying to party until 4am.
The way to attack this place is by not limiting yourself. Show up around 7pm for happy hour (4-8pm) so you can get a few drinks at a discounted rate and then plan to make this a marathon event. While you’re sipping on your $6 cocktail (wines, well drinks, draft/bottle beer), now is the time to start perusing the menu for what you’re going to grub on. Once you’ve gotten yourself a little liquored up (let’s say it’s now 8pm), go hard on the “nosh” menu.
The food may actually blow you away. Not literally of course. We visited for the ambiance and some heavy drinking on a Friday night, but were pleasantly surprised by the food. The Dublin Cheese Sticks are the first thing you need to order. Seriously, don’t even look at the menu for anything else until you know the order is placed for these. Comparable to mozzarella sticks, but taken to an entirely new level of tasty, you’ll get twice-the-size cheese sticks filled with Dubliner cheddar, which are then rolled in panko and fried to a perfect golden brown.
The Ballymaloe Burger and the wings are something to tinker with as well. The wings are super meaty and come in two flavor offerings – Guinness BBQ and Jameson Habanero. Both serve a purpose by catering to the fans of sweet or spicy, and regardless of your choice, you’ll feel like you made the right decision.
Once you’ve coated that stomach in some Irish-inspired nourishment, now is the time to kick the drinking game into high gear. Get classy with a Black Velvet (prosecco and Guinness) or order the very photogenic, Pineapple Express, which is a drink that is served over fire and large enough for 2 people. It includes Absolut Elyx, Ginger, Lemongrass, Thai Chili, Prosecco, and Taro Root Tincture.
Once the clock strikes 11pm, you should be feeling loose and ready to cut a rug. Work your way downstairs to where the craziness happens and late night partygoers fill out the dancefloor to keep the party going until the wee hours of the morning. This is now a go-to spot on our list and we suggest you try it so you can do the same for yourself.
